Game Overview

Even after fifty years,  this is a staple household game. I still remember how my cousins and I used to huddle around the fireplace and play this game of targeted guessing. I personally enjoy this quirky game a little bit too much.

A man named Mordecai Meirowitz was the original creator of this game Mordecai was an Israeli postmaster and telecommunications expert. The game was an instant classic and even got featured in the popular Nuremberg International Toy Fair. This is a popular pen-and-paper game that shares a resemblance with the Bulls and Cows game. The famous Invicta Plastics originally released the game after some minor modifications by the founder Edward Jones-Fenleigh

Since its release, the game has sold close to a million copies and has gone through several iterations. Therefore, in celebration of this popular game, let us dive right in on the nitty-gritty details about the game.

How To Play The Mastermind Game?

How To Play The Mastermind Game

The Mastermind is primarily a two-player game. But we used to play the game in teams of two. So, let us look at the primary objective of the Mastermind game in order to truly understand the game. The primary objective of the game is simple. In order to win the game, you have to figure out your code before your opponent.

Let’s go!!!

Selecting A Code

Players are divided into code makers and code breakers at the very beginning. The board game has two sets of holed rows. The first set of rows is called the playable holes. Here, the code breakers will have to place their guesses. The second set is a shielded row of holes where the correct code is set. The game starts as soon as the code maker sets a code in the shielded row of holes.

Place The First Guess

As soon as the game starts, the code breakers will try to break the code. Code breakers try to guess the original code. The code is essentially a color code. The code breaker will take four color codes and arrange them accordingly. This game is based on the proponents of trial and error. You just have to guess the correct code before your opponents.

Ask For Feedback

A code breaker can ask for feedback on a specific code while arranging the code. However, this feedback is given in the form of pegs. These pegs only come in two colors, red and white. Code makers use these pegs to give his or her feedback on the guess.

A red peg means that the guessed code is the right color and is in the right place. Meanwhile, a white peg means that the color of the code is guessed correctly.  However ball is in wrong hole.

While playing the game, you need to remember that the number of feedback is finite, and you need to use it accordingly.

Learn Via Examples

The Mastermind game is primarily a game of trial and error. Hence, you need to always keep your eyes open and learn from the feedback. Keep an eye out for the kind of feedback you get. I will suggest that you use a pen and paper to keep track of the feedback. This will help you and your team to approach the game methodically and systematically.

Repeat

This is a game that uses almost 100% of your brain and observational powers. Similar to step 1, you need to make another targeted guess. However, this time you are not flying blind. This time you have some idea or feedback about the quality of your guessing. Like for example, if you have guessed two pegs spot on, then you already know half of the code. Now is the time to proceed with your guessing with a little more caution. Try not to use up all your feedback unless you are sure about what you are doing. Think of code maker feedback as cheats. Try not to deplete it early in the game.

Continue Until Completion

The game of mastermind continues till the codebreaker guesses the correct code perfectly. A code breaker’s job is to crack the code using all the feedback. The code breaker wins the game if he or she guesses the code correctly. However, the code maker wins if the code breaker fails before the rows are filled out,

Switch Places And Repeat

If the first code breaker manages to break the code before the rows end, then the roles will be reversed. The code breaker will become the code maker and vice versa. The rules remain the same. However, in order to win, the code breaker has to crack the code before the previous attempt.

End Note.

In summation, this was all we had for the amazing puzzle game called the Mastermind Game. It is a game that is not only fun but also helps the player hone their observational and targeted guessing skills. Two very important skills that one must polish and hone.
