Casino Magazine’s Christmas Gift: Poker Cards And Everything That You Need To Know About Them!

Poker Players, And Some Memorable Sayings!

While Poker is mostly known as a luck game, it does require plenty of skills and each player is considered to be the master of their own fate. Before we start talking about things like ‘poker card size’ and other related topics, let’s turn back the pages of time and talk about the game and its origins a little.

Poker And Its Origins:

In sixteenth-century Germany, people often engaged in a game known as Pochen – it was primarily a bluffing game that the French developed into an updated version known as Poque. This version of the game then traveled to New Orleans and was played amongst people residing in the riverboats piled against the Mississippi river.

It was only in 1830 that Poker came into existence, and subsequently, its variations started appearing sooner or later. For instance, a variation known as Stud Poker came into existence during the Civil War. As a result, there are multiple Poker versions, and it’s played in so many different settings with so many different people.

The Pack And The Poker Cards:

The Pack And The Poker Cards

Any standard card deck comprising 52 cards accompanied by 1 or 2 Jokers is ideally used for a game of Poker. However, currently, most Poker games hosted by clubs are often using about 2 different packs of Poker cards, and that too in two different colors, in order to simply speed the game up!

So while the dealer deals out the first pack, the next pack is already being prepared and shuffled for the second deal. The process is pretty simple.

  • While the first deal is in progress, the dealer simply starts assembling all cards belonging to the pack, already dealt out. Once he has assembled these cards, he simply shuffles these and keeps them on the left.
  • When the time for the second deal takes place, the deck that has been shuffled is simply passed to the second dealer. In several games with two decks of cards, the left-hand player of the dealer gets to cut the pack instead of the opponent on the right.

Moreover, in most clubs, it is considered customary to actually change Poker cards very often and even to allow players to start calling for a new card whenever they want. And when these new poker playing cards get introduced, both of the packs get replaced – while doing so, it is essential that both the cellophane wrapping and even the seal are broken in front of the players.

Poker Cards And Standard Poker Hand Rankings:

Poker Hand Rankings

Now that you have a clear idea about how many decks of cards for poker, let’s talk about standard Poker hand rankings!

So, there are around 52 different cards in a Poker card deck, and the ranking moves simply from high-to-low. Here’s what the ranking for Poker looks like,

  • King,
  • Queen,
  • Jack,
  • 10,
  • 8,
  • 7,
  • 6,
  • 5,
  • 4,
  • 3,
  • 2.

Also, there’s absolutely no ranking among the suits. For instance, the King Of Spades and the King Of Hearts are equivalent in terms of value.

Additionally, an ideal Poker hand comprises five Poker cards. There are already different categories of Poker hands, right from the highest to the lowest. Obviously, Poker hands hailing from a relatively higher hand will beat the same from a lower hand. If two players have Poker hands in a single category, then victory depends on which player has cards of better ranking.

Also, instead of wasting time on the size of poker cards, it is better to understand that a player with more than 5 Poker cards will select 5 to form their Poker hand – this means the remaining Poker cards have no role to play during ranking since Poker rankings are always related to five cards.

Here’s a glimpse of how these Poker rankings go!

  • Royal Flush,
  • Straight Flush,
  • Four Of A kind,
  • Full House,
  • Flush,
  • Straight,
  • Three Of A kind,
  • Two Pairs,
  • Pair, and
  • High Card.
