Come on, you guys haven’t heard of the Sequence game? It’s one of our favorite strategy-focused games out there. The best part? Anyone above six can play this game – yep! The Sequence rules are THAT easy!
Before you start playing, you just need to set the game up – divide into teams and distribute the cards and chips accurately. The purpose is relatively simple – all the players will have to put chips on the game board and finish the sequences that are needed to finish the game.
Of course, you need to know the different rules of the game because these are sorta unique. So, without wasting time, let’s go!
Sequence Rules: How To Play Sequence?
Before we crack the Sequence rules, here’s a brief overview of the game!
Objective | To finish the sequences on the board before the other players. |
Number of Players | 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, or 12 players can play. |
Materials | A game board, 104 cards, 48 chips each in Green, Blue, & red, and a rule book. |
Type of Game | Strategy-Focused Board Game |
Audience | Anyone Above 6 |
As we just said, Sequence is more of a strategy-focused game involving either two or three individual participants or even the same number of teams with twelve players at the most.
The game’s goal is simple: to be either the first player or team to finish the number of sequences needed to win the overall game.
Sounds interesting, right? Let’s get started!
Setup:
You should split up teams evenly, with every team or individual player taking a particular color marker – Red, Green, or Blue. Also, ensure that players are sitting in a way so that no two players from the same team end up sitting beside each other.
You guys can choose the dealer randomly. Once you all have selected the dealer, the dealer will shuffle the deck of sequence cards before dealing out cards to each of the players.
The number of cards that will be given to each player will be determined by the number of players playing the game at the time.
For example, if it’s a two-player game, then each player will get seven cards. Similarly, for three or four-player games, each player gets six cards, while for 6-player games, each player gets five cards. For eight and nine-player games, each player gets four cards, while for ten and twelve-player games, each player gets three cards.
The rest of the cards in the deck will form the draw pile.
Ensure that you are keeping the game board at the center. Also, keep the discards, the additional markers, and the draw deck in the center as well.
Sequence Rules:
The official Sequence rules say that the player sitting on the dealer’s left begins the game. Then, the gameplay continues in a clockwise direction.
Every player will get a turn. On this turn, the player has to choose a card from their hand. Now, they will have to play the card on their own, discard-pile facing up. After that, the player will have to place any of their markers on the board’s matching open space.
Once the player has placed the markers, they can draw a card and add it to the cards in their hand from the draw deck.
In case a player doesn’t draw a card before the turn passes to the next player, then they will have to play with a hand that is smaller than the rest for the remaining part of the game.
Remember that the game board has only two matching spaces meant for every card except the Jacks.
Players can play any of the matching spaces with their matching cards. It just has to be empty. If another marker occupies the matching space in question, then nobody else can play in that space.
The purpose of the game is basically to create sequences. And you can do this by matching five of your (or your team’s) colored chips in a single row. Now, you can form the sequence diagonally, vertically, and horizontally. However, it has to be one line with zero gaps.
Once any player forms a sequence, it will stay so for the remaining part of the game. The game does not allow anyone to stop or erase an existing sequence.
Corner Chips:
You will find four corner chips on the game board. While you are building a sequence in connection with this space, as per Sequence rules, it is counted as one chip for all the teams.
If you choose to use any corner chips, you will need only four chips for making a sequence.
Jacks:
In a deck of cards, there are two different types of Jacks – two-eyed and one-eyed Jacks. In total, there are eight Jacks.
You can play a one-eyed Jack to eliminate the chip of another team from the game board. However, you can’t do this to finish a sequence.
Two-eyed Jacks are like Wild Cards (remember UNO?) that allow players to place any chip anywhere of their choice on the game board.
Dead Cards:
It is certainly possible to end up with dead cards. Dead cards are cards that you can’t play because all spaces on the game board are already covered.
Once in every turn, players are allowed to exchange a dead card for a new card. For this, players have to play the dead card on their discard piles and declare the same as a dead card. Then, they can draw a new one and play their turn.
Ending The Game:
The game will end when any team or individual player is able to finish the number of sequences required for winning.
- For two players or teams, you will need to complete two sequences to win.
- For three players or teams, you will require three sequences.
And It’s A Wrap!
And it’s a wrap on the Sequence rules! Doesn’t it sound fun? If you are a sucker for board game nights with the fam, then Sequence is an excellent choice for your next game night with the family. Plus, the game can accommodate so many players that it is perfect for both big and nuclear families!
