Purpose of a Straddle

Now, coming to the scenario. When the player calls straddle, the preflop betting round will automatically play out. And now that player is in the big blind. Let’s call that person X. Now, the person left to X has to act first to preflop. This person can either call $6 or fold as that person wants. They can also raise if they want. Now the same thing proceeds around the table. 

The process continues until X is the last person to act. If you ask me about the process of postflop betting, then there is no difference between a normal bet and a straddle poker round. The action resumes as normal. In most poker room rules, the straddle is only allowed to the under the gun position. But you will find that button player or any position are permitted to make straddles. 

There are also poker rooms where you can double and triple straddles, also you can make the straddle five times or any time. For example, when a player calls a straddle for $6, the player who is left to X, they can bet for $12, which is a double straddle. There are poker rooms where you can bet $18, $24, or even $30. And then, the game continues as a normal poker game.

Straddle Poker: Is It A Bad Idea?

When a player straddles, that means the expected value will go down. Now see, X is putting a blind bet which means X has no idea about the cards or it is an unknown hand. There are people who are against this rule as it completely contradicts the poker strategy. One of the most crucial things is hand selection. 

In most casinos, only the under-the-gun can straddle. This is the position where the tightest hand is needed for a winning strategy. Suppose you are the person who is in place of person X. You have already straddled, and then you look at your cards which are 3 of spades and 7 of hearts. In most Hold’em poker games, there is folded preflop. And when it comes to blind raises, they are not quite good in the long run.

There is also a rule where the hands straddle, then there will be stacks cut in half. The same thing happens in big blinds. For example, if the game consists of $1/$3 and the game is $300, then the bid blind would be 100. In this case, the big blind decreases to 50 when the straddle amount is $6. So, the $6 acts as the big blind, and the game turns into a $1/$3/$6.

When the big blind turns 50, the strategy of the game changes as well. After this, the postflop will start, and the poker table will become difficult. 

Straddle Poker: Best Time To Play

As of now, you are aware of the rule, but do you know what the best time to play a straddle is? 

The first scenario is where the table becomes a loose passive table.  As you are watching players prone to calling loose preflop, you can show aggression. And then, the table changes to a dynamic one, where you can take advantage of the passive players. But there is a downside, you need to put massive bets as the preflop is already high. If you have a brave heart, just go for it.

The next scenario is when every other player is straddling. When you see that excluding you, everyone is straddling, that is the best time to play straddle poker. And the game will be intense, for sure. 

And the last scenario is when everyone is a nit. In this case, a straddle can be an excellent catalyst for taking action. But, you should know that straddling might become backfire.

There are some players who straddle from the button, and it is called Button straddles. If other players do the straddle, that is called a Mississippi straddle.
