Washington State Casino Closes After Officer Kills Murder Suspect

| December 14, 2023 | Casino News

The Lucky Eagle Casino, based in Washington DC, shuttered temporarily this week right after a murder suspect was wounded fatally by a tribal police officer inside the gaming complex.

The unnamed officer shot the 33-year-old Darren Evans, a resident of Yelm, Washington DC, on Sunday night right after approaching him in the gaming property at Rochester. The casino closed for the time being while the police were investigating the incident, as per The Olympian.

Witness Account:

A witness was able to take a video of the shooting inside the casino and ended up providing certain details.

Dee Thomas told KOMO, a radio station in Washington State, “He [Evans] was running toward my direction. I think he tried to get to the front door exit, and then all of a sudden, I saw the officer shot him right in the middle of the floor. You think you’re going to a public place that’s a safe place, that’s secure, and anything could happen. So, it’s one of those things. I guess that’s the world that we live in right now.

Police did not share details as to why the officer shot Evans. It is not clear if Evans was actually armed or if he tried to injure the police officer right before the officer was able to discharge his firearm.

The police did talk about how they were tipped off that Evan was there inside the casino on Sunday night. They have an arrest warrant for Evans in connection to a murder that happened in 2022.

Officers tried to give Evans first aid after the traumatic event, but by then, he had already passed away. The FBI, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs were investigating the matter.

The Chehalis Tribe operates the Lucky Eagle Casino, located around 25 miles southwest of Olympia.
