The unionized employees at Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts, and Wynn Resorts approved the latest labor agreements earlier this week. Now, the Culinary Union is focusing on 24 other properties in Las Vegas.
If negotiations in the future fail to actually come up with any satisfactory agreement for around ten thousand employees at the 24 other properties, then a strike is definitely possible, as per the warnings of Ted Pappageorge, the Secretary-Treasurer of the Culinary Union.
KTNV, a TV station based in Vegas, quoted Pappageorge saying, “I think we’re going to have some tough negotiations with these properties.” Pappageorge is hoping the other properties will opt for the same economic package agreed upon by the three big companies.
For the downtown properties in Vegas, the Union is asking for a similar increase in wages. Traditionally, downtown properties have paid workers less than what is being paid to workers at the casinos and the hotels located on the Las Vegas Strip.
Wynn Votes:
On Wednesday, Wynn’s unionized employees voted overwhelmingly by a 99% margin for the agreement tentatively. The 5-year deal offers a 3 dollars per hour increase in salary for workers who do not get any tips, as per KTNV. Workers who do receive tips will actually get around half of their salary boost, as per KTNV.
These agreements for Caesars, MGM, and Wynn will cause a salary increase of 10% for different hospitality workers in the agreement’s 1st year as per the Culinary Union. Simply put, they will be able to earn an increase of 32% cumulatively over the contract.
This particular deal actually includes bartenders, cooks, bellmen, porters, food servers, cocktail servers, and housekeepers, as well as kitchen and laundry workers at those properties.
Salary Increases:
On average, a member of the Culinary Union earns around 28 dollars an hour with benefits under the former contract. By the time the new 5-year contract ends, members of the union, on average, will earn around 37 dollars an hour with benefits, according to Pappageorge’s statement.
He also added, “The total compensation won by the Culinary Union for MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts workers is approximately $2 billion over the total five-year contract.”
